Fast Food influences are not hot news nowadays; we all know the negative effects that this kind of food has upon our body. We are what we eat, and every piece of food we eat affects our body in a certain way.
A recent study on this topic draws a new alarm. It seems that food fast negatively affect children’s brain development.
According to this study, the first that takes into account the links between diet and brain development of children, children who eat more chips, biscuits and pizza before three years have a lower IQ after 5 years. IQ difference to children with a healthy diet is up to 5 points. The study reveals the fact that even when the diet was improved along the way, IQ has not changed, indicating that the effects are irreversible.
The research was conducted at the University of Bristol and took into account complex issues such as social class, breastfeeding, maternal education, age, etc.. The study took into account also linked to the elements of child development, such as access to toys or books. The results led to the idea that diet is crucial in the first three years of life when the brain is developing rapidly. Fast food meals contain too few nutrients and therefore slow down the development of the brain.
The study is based on data that took into account the development of over 14,000 children born in the ’90s. Their parents completed questionnaires on a range of foods and beverages consumed by their children at age 3, 4, 7 and 8 years. Based on these survey shave identified three types of children’s diet: a diet based more on processed foods, rich in fat and sugar, a traditional diet based more on meat and vegetables and a healthy diet, rich in salads, fruits and vegetables.
Children’s IQ was measured around the age of 8 years and was put in touch with their food. It was found that the diet that they had at age 4 or 7 has not influenced in any way the IQ, while eating up to three years has been critical to brain development. Over 20% of children with poor eating up to 3 years had a 5-point lower IQ than the others, who had a healthy diet.
Children need healthy food, they do not eat only to quench the hunger but also to keep the body in good shape and to develop correctly.
